No matter how much you enjoy blogging or how often you post to your blog, there will come a time when you can’t decide what you want to write about. This can sound like a minor annoyance for someone who doesn’t blog regularly, but it can derail your writing efforts just as quickly as any writer’s block. And yes, that’s sometimes what you’re dealing with when you can’t come up with a subject for your next blog post. Those who don’t blog creatively and only maintain a blog for their small business might find that they have no new updates to post to their clients even though they need to maintain a regular blogging schedule.

Finding new content ideas is one of the keys to maintaining a successful blog. Fortunately, this isn’t as difficult as you might think. If you find yourself unable to come up with new blog post topics, consider some of these strategies.

Read Other Blogs

They say that every good writer is also a good reader, and that is just as true of bloggers as it is to novelists and poets. Reading other blogs in general can give you a good idea of how to write a good post, and reading blogs that are within your niche can give you inspiration for your next post. The easiest way to find other blogs within your niche is with a Google search, but if you want to find out what topics are currently trending, you might want to use a tool such as Bottlenose to find out what topics are trending on social media. Find out what topics are trending within your blogging niche, seek out the most popular blogs covering it, and go from there. While you’re at it, check out the comments section of different blogs since they can give you ideas as well. You shouldn’t just copy what other popular blogs are doing, but you might find a way to cover a trending topic from an angle that nobody has considered before.

Keep a List of Blog Topics

Whether you are struggling to come up with a new blog post or you’ve been putting out content weekly, you should keep a list of topics that you can refer to at any time. If you find a topic that sounds interesting, put it on your list. As long as you can turn that topic into an evergreen post that fits safely within your blogging niche, you will have something to write about even when you think you’ve run out of ideas.

Answer Customer Questions

If you manage a small business, you almost certainly have some questions from your clients. While you should do your best to answer clients directly when they come to you with a question, these queries can also make for some excellent blog post ideas. You obviously want to stick to more general questions such as what you might find on a “Frequently Asked Questions” section of a website, but it’s still a great way to come up with useful content when you think you’re out of ideas.

Open Your Blog to Guest Posters

If you don’t know what you want to write about for your next blog post, you can always open things up for a guest blogger for a week. Not only does this give you a break to come up with content for the following week, but it can expand your readership when your guest’s fans show up on your website. They can read your previous posts and perhaps become regular readers. As long as your guest still blogs within your niche and isn’t too different from your usual style, it’s hard to go wrong with this kind of proposition.

Browse Social Media

When you’re not reading other blogs for inspiration, you should be browsing Facebook and Twitter for trending topics. This might give you the inspiration that you need for your week’s blog post, or it might give you some ideas for future posts.

Ask Your Friends

Whether you speak to them in person or online, your friends and colleagues can provide inspiration for future blog posts. Ask them what they would want to read, or even for feedback on your previous posts. Even if they don’t think they can give you good ideas for future posts, simply having a conversation might be enough to provide some inspiration.

Write Reviews

If you can’t come up with a compelling topic for your next post, consider writing a review of a product or service. This might not always be the best option if you’re selling your own products and services, but it could be a great way to gain readers if you’re running a blog to keep people informed. Writing a review is really just expressing your opinion, and while it does take some creativity to make a review worth the read, it’s still easier than coming up with a lengthy essay about current events or anything else you normally cover in your corner of the Internet.

Just Keep Writing

We know it’s hard to keep writing when there’s nothing to write about, but sometimes it’s the best way to find inspiration. What you write doesn’t necessarily have to be “good,” either; all that matters is that you’re committing your thoughts to paper or your computer screen. As long as you keep finding ways to express yourself, something will click into place and give you an idea for your next post.
